Apple was founded by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne in April 1976 to develop and sell Wozniak’s Apple I personal computer. It was incorporated as Apple Computer, Inc. in January 1977, and sales of its computers, including the Apple II, grew quickly. Within a few years, Jobs and Wozniak had hired a staff of computer designers and had a production line. Apple went public in 1980 to instant financial success. Over the next few years, Apple shipped new computers featuring innovative graphical user interfaces, such as the original Macintosh in 1984, and Apple’s marketing commercials for its products received widespread critical acclaim. However, the high price of its products and limited software titles caused problems, as did power struggles between executives. In 1985, Wozniak departed Apple amicably and remained an honorary employee, while Jobs and others resigned to found NeXT.
As the market for personal computers increased, Apple’s computers lost market share to lower-priced products from competitors, in particular those offered with the Microsoft Windows operating system. Nevertheless, Apple retained a strong following among education and business users and had a loyal base of Mac OS fans.
In 1998, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs returned to the company as an interim CEO, helping to turn the struggling company around. Jobs brought a new industrial design ethos to Apple and introduced the iMac, iTunes, iPod, iPhone, and iPad. He also worked with the developers of the Macintosh OS X operating system, which was introduced in 2001.
3. Tesla, Inc.
Tesla, Inc. is an American multinational corporation that specializes in electric vehicles, energy storage, and renewable energy. The company was founded in 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning, and it is headquartered in Palo Alto, California. Tesla’s current products include electric cars, battery energy storage from home to grid scale, solar panels and solar roof tiles, and related products and services.
In 2016, Tesla launched the Model S, the world’s first all-electric luxury sedan, followed by the Model X, an all-electric SUV. The Model 3, Tesla’s first mass-market vehicle, was launched in 2017. Tesla’s products are among the most efficient on the market, with the Model S achieving the highest EPA range rating of any electric car ever.
Tesla has delivered over half a million electric cars to customers worldwide. The company has a market capitalization of over $60 billion, and its products are sold in over 50 countries.
